I found 71 people complaining about the same problem. Not one would pay to fix it.

If you’ve ever freelanced, you know the feeling. There’s no finance department chasing invoices for you. No accounts receivable team. Just you, an overdue invoice, and an awkward “just checking in…” email you rewrite three times — while your rent is due next week.

So when I needed a real-world idea to stress-test, I picked this one: a tool that helps freelancers chase late payments. Sounds like a no-brainer, right?

I ran it through a validation tool I’m building called PVRE — it pulls Reddit data, weighs the signals, and scores viability. 71 Reddit threads confirmed this is a real, painful problem. 89 mentions of invoice stress. Timing couldn’t be better either — gig economy booming, +226% growth in discussions.

And when you look closer, it makes sense. Sending an invoice is easy — every free tool already does that. The actual pain is chasing people who ghost you. The follow-up you agonize over. The polite-but-firm tone you can never quite nail. And no software fixes that, because the real problem isn’t the invoice — it’s the power dynamic. You need the money. They control the next gig. An app doesn’t change that equation.

This is what Reddit tells you that a survey never will. A survey asks “is this painful?” and everyone says yes. Reddit shows you what people actually do about it — which is complain, use a free tool, and move on.

Does that mean the idea is dead? Not necessarily. It means I know exactly what to validate next. Are freelancers actually spending money on this? Is there a specific niche — say, agencies with 50+ recurring clients — where the pain is severe enough to pay? The research flagged these as the right questions to ask before I wrote a single line of code.

I figured this out in 10 minutes. Not 3 months. Not after building a landing page. Not after asking my friends if it’s a good idea (they would’ve said yes).
